Midwives are being driven out of the NHS by understaffing and fears they can’t deliver safe care to women in the current system. 57% of midwives said they would leave the NHS in the next year, according to a survey carried out by the Royal College of Midwives in October 2021.

Gemma Puckett is Head of Midwifery at Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundations Trust. With over 20 years of experience as a midwife, Gemma has worked in a variety of clinical settings which has given her great insight across different parts of the NHS system. She is passionate about people, especially their wellbeing and work experiences, and the impacts these can have on patient safety and culture.

In this video, Gemma shares how training staff and developing good team culture can improve patient outcomes. By drawing from lessons learnt within her own team, she highlights the importance of looking after staff to improve retention and ensure better patient care.
