At Pakeman Primary School in Islington, the number of Pupil Premium students and those with English as an additional language is significantly higher than the national average. To encourage children to develop their English and interpersonal skills, the school identified the value of integrating the arts into the school day, in the form of drawing, drama and music.

Emma Bonnin is the Acting Headteacher at Pakeman Primary School. The pupils at Pakeman have equipped Emma with a wealth of experience and knowledge in supporting children to develop their social, emotional and communication skills. She leads a committed and passionate team that encourage and value pupil wellbeing alongside academic achievement.

In this session from The Delivering Excellence in Teaching Arts in Schools Conference, 2021, Emma shared the ways that Pakeman School uses visual learning methods, creative play, music and the arts to give disadvantaged pupils an outlet for self-expression and a sense of community.
