2.4 million people experienced domestic abuse in England and Wales in the last year: 1.6 million women and 786,000 men. Additionally, two women a week die at the hands of their partner or ex-partner. The Covid-19 pandemic has seen a huge increase in reports of domestic abuse. This calls for amplified safeguarding services to support victims that are at risk in their own homes.

SafeLives are a UK-wide charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse, for everyone and for good. Janine Roderick is Head of Practice at Safelives. They spoke at our Adult Safeguarding 2021 conference, outlining the work of the charity while providing statistics to contextualise the safeguarding concern. Janine further discusses the effectiveness of tackling perpetrators as a safeguarding tool, the need to provide safe accommodation and the power in speaking to victims about their abuse.
